From Working at the Shelter to Community Leader: The Inspiring Journey of Amber "AJ" Johnson

3 min read

Every community has defining moments, but the true heartbeat of a place like Serve City isn't just in the walls of our building...it’s in the people. It’s in the stories of transformation, resilience, and the relentless pursuit of a better life. Today, we want to celebrate one of our own: Amber Johnson, affectionately known to all of us as "AJ."

Her journey is a powerful reminder of what happens when determination meets opportunity, and when a person refuses to let their past dictate their future.

A Foundation Built on Resilience

When AJ first walked through the doors at Serve City back in 2022, she was carrying a heavy load. She was on probation and navigating the felony court system. She had experienced firsthand the heartbreak of homelessness and the grueling battle against addiction. She had even experienced the pain of losing custody of her children, with her family stepping in to provide temporary care.

Many people would look at those obstacles and feel defeated. AJ looked at them as a starting line.

She threw herself into building a robust community of support. Through hard work, grit, and perseverance, she successfully graduated from both probation and SAMI. And in one of her most cherished milestones while at Serve City, she was fully reunited with her children, bringing her family back together under one roof.

Rising Through the Ranks at Serve City

AJ’s journey at Serve City began on the front lines, working the 2nd shift in our shelter as a Support Specialist. She had no professional work experience or degree, but it wasn't long before her natural work ethic and compassion stood out.

Because she excelled in her role, she was promoted to Intake Coordinator. In this position, she became the very first smiling face and welcoming presence that individuals and families in crisis encountered when they arrived seeking shelter.

She understood their fears because she had walked a similar path.

With a hunger to learn and a drive to grow, AJ leaned into mentorship and coaching to sharpen her leadership skills. When our shelter manager position opened up, she was asked to step in as a shelter manager-in-training. Her dedication paid off, and she was officially promoted to Shelter Manager, leading our team with empathy, strength, and wisdom.

Continuing the Climb

As life evolved, so did AJ’s professional path. While Serve City is a place of incredible impact, we couldn't offer the health insurance coverage that AJ needed for her growing family. Making a bittersweet transition, she accepted a role as a Case Manager at Modern Psychiatry and Wellness (MPW).

True to form, AJ didn't just work a job, she excelled. She was soon promoted to Court Liaison. After a year of building deep, meaningful relationships throughout Butler County, her expertise caught the attention of the Butler County Health District, where she was hired as a Harm Reduction Specialist. Today, she uses her voice, her experience, and her professional skills to protect and educate the broader community.

Full Circle: Coming Home to Train

AJ’s story took a wonderful full-circle turn just last week. She stopped back by Serve City—not as an employee or a client, but as an educator and community partner—to provide her first solo Narcan training for our staff.

To watch someone who once fought for her own survival now stand at the front of the room, equipping our team with life-saving skills, was nothing short of breathtaking.

And the milestones keep coming! AJ is also celebrating a massive personal milestone this month: she is getting married to her longtime boyfriend on their 10-year anniversary.

A Beacon of Hope

AJ’s story is the very definition of the Serve City mission in action. It is a testament to the fact that recovery is possible, families can be restored, and past struggles do not define your future.

We are so immensely proud of you, AJ. Thank you for continuing to pour your heart into the community that loves you so well!
