One Encounter at Kroger That Changed Everything and Ignited This Hero's Passion.

For the founder of The Highly Favored Foundation, Alberta Ablordeppey, that defining moment happened in the parking lot of a local Kroger.

A Journey from Ghana to a Life-Changing Encounter

Long before founding The Highly Favored Foundation, Alberta grew up in Ghana, West Africa, raised by a resilient widowed mother. Throughout her childhood, America was spoken of as a distant land of promise: a big, prosperous country brimming with boundless opportunity. She always dreamed of coming here, and when the door finally opened to attend Northern Kentucky University, it felt like a dream come true.

Arriving in the United States brought a whirlwind of adjustments. Everything was new: the culture, the customs, the daily rhythm of life. Through immense determination and hard work, Alberta learned to navigate her new surroundings, completed her education, and built a meaningful life dedicating 12 years to Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield.

America had truly become home. An ordinary trip to Kroger brought a different, selfless purpose.

While there, a young girl approached Alberta and softly asked for a quarter. Still unfamiliar with the term, Alberta didn't know what a "quarter" was until a bystander explained it meant 25 cents. Curious and concerned, Alberta gently asked the little girl why she needed it.

The answer stopped her in her tracks: the girl’s family was living out of their car, and they were starving. A single question echoed in Alberta's mind: Here in America?

She knew hardship existed across the globe, but Alberta never imagined meeting a child living out of a vehicle without enough to eat in the very country renowned for its abundance. Reaching into her pocket, all she had was about $40. Alberta knew $40 couldn't solve their homelessness, secure them a permanent roof, or wipe away their struggles overnight. But she knew she could do something. Without hesitation, Alberta walked across the street to McDonald's and bought the family a hot, hearty meal.

She returned home that evening, yet the image of that hungry child and her family never left her heart. That single, unforgettable encounter ignited the spark that would become The Highly Favored Foundation. An organization born out of Alberta's deep conviction that while one person may not solve every crisis, no one is powerless to step into the gap and make a tangible differences in the lives of our neighbors.

An Invaluable Partner at Serve City

Today, that same compassion is in motion right here at Serve City.  Every Tuesday, The Highly Favored Foundation faithfully stands shoulder-to-shoulder with our team at our Food Pantry. They step in to provide essential personal hygiene products and baby necessities (diapers, wipes, and basic care items) to local families who visit The Source seeking relief.  

These items are often the most difficult for struggling families to afford, yet they are vital to daily health, comfort, and human dignity.
