Johnny's Story - Finding Home

Having a roof over your head is important, but it’s not the same as finding a home. Many people experiencing homelessness face challenges that make it hard to find stability. Johnny was tired of the chaos of homelessness and the struggles of addiction. His journey started with lots of uncertainty, but it wasn’t solved by finding a place to sleep.

When he first connected with Serve City, Johnny was just looking for a place to sleep and ended up finding a way back to himself.  Johnny’s story is raw, honest, and a powerful reminder that people can change when a community stands beside them.

“I started getting in trouble around 12,” Johnny says. “I’ve been going to jail for about 20 years. I was homeless, doing drugs, and I kept falling back.” He remembers times he reached for God and other seasons when doubt and pain pushed him away. Addiction, arrests, and homelessness followed. Yet even at his lowest, unexpected kindness found him: “I came to Serve City a couple years ago. I just started getting gifts… blessings that I was never asking for.”

This most recent stay has been different. “Something clicked one day, and I started going to church. I got baptized last night,” Johnny shares.  Serve City is hosting a non-denominational service in The Source every other Saturday and invite our participants and the community to unite in support one another and to worship Jesus.

“I’m just trying to get everything right, talk to God more… stay positive and keep the negative energy away.” For Johnny, the combination of stable shelter, support, and ongoing encouragement opened the door to reclaiming dignity and rebuilding his life.   Johnny invited his mother to church this past Saturday.  His mother shared that she is excited that Johnny is back in her life.  She never thought that would be possible.

Rebuilding Community.  Restore Dignity. Renew Hope.

Johnny’s words show how small acts like a safe bed for the night, consistent support, and someone to believe in you can turn into something much larger: renewed hope, faith restored, and the dignity of having a place to belong. He speaks not of instant perfection but steady progress by staying connected to church, encouraging others, and taking responsibility for the future. That steady support is how Serve City helps neighbors move from crisis to stability.

When Serve City helps one person like Johnny, ripple effects spread through Hamilton: families become more stable, public resources are less strained, and neighbors regain their ability to participate and contribute.  His renewed faith and motivation to “get other people to come to church” and to “keep doing a good thing” are small examples of how restored lives inspire communities to rebuild.

We Need You

Success depends on neighbors who invest their time, skills, and resources into our ministry. Johnny’s transformation wasn’t just about a room and a bed. It was about finding hope again and believing that things could get better. It was also about feeling valued and heard, without being judged. Through a community of support, like you, Serve City can help others like Johnny regain independence and a sense of self-worth. Together, we can show how compassion paired with practical services can change a life.

  • Volunteer Your Time: From assisting at our food pantry to helping with administrative tasks, your hands-on help is the engine that drives our mission. Mentor, lead a faith group, gather a group of friends and serve a meal, or offer job-readiness coaching. Relationships matter. Volunteers provide the personal connection that changes outcomes.

  • Financial Partnership: One-time or monthly donations go directly toward the supportive services that help individuals navigate the transition from the streets to a home.

  • Spread the Word: Share Johnny’s video! Awareness is the first step toward breaking the stigma surrounding housing instability in our region.

  • Donate Essential Goods: New home "starter kits" (linens, kitchenware, and cleaning supplies) make a world of difference for someone moving into their first apartment.

  • Host a Drive: Organize neighborhood or workplace collections for essentials like canned goods and cleaning supplies.

  • Partner Locally: Employers can offer job opportunities, apprenticeship slots, interviews, training, or entry-level positions to our program participants.

  • Support our Events: Join Serve City’s community events to learn more and meet our staff.

If Johnny’s journey moved you, consider taking one small step today: volunteer an hour, donate an item, or share his story with a friend. Together, we can continue restoring lives, one neighbor at a time.  Stop by and ask how you can support neighbors rebuilding their lives. Your help could be the next blessing someone never expected: the opportunity to say, "I'm home.".
