Have a Heart for Mike
Here is his story, told in his words.
Hurt – I put my trust in the wrong person. That’s what it comes down to. The girl I was dating. I was living in Taylor Mill, Kentucky. I had my own apartment, and she did, too. My roof collapsed on me. She said I could move in with her. It went great for a while. Then she decided she did not like me seeing my kids so much because they were here. She told me I couldn’t use the car. She called and said I needed to pack your stuff and get out. I told her, “I guess I’ll pack my stuff,” and came to Serve City.
Help - I packed my stuff and came to Serve City. I knew about it because I stayed about 12 years ago. I have received loads of help. So much stuff. The list is long and numerous. In twenty days, I’ll be here a year between all the Move Forward Steps. I have gotten help with jobs. From Larry from the board. Jen hooked me up with one. Housing – housing! Counseling with JT. I try to see him at least once a week. I try to see him on Mondays. I internalize things. I talk things out with him. Medical. Medicaid. Food stamps when I had them. Just social networking. I have met so many people. All the staff. Pastor Aaron and 17 Strong. I met council members there. My current job is a steppingstone.
Hope – I have four kids. My oldest is 16, 14 about to be 15, 13 about to be 14, 12 about to be 13. My son is getting ready for a program where he can start college and graduate early. I will be in my own place. That is happening on the soon side. My rapid re-housing paperwork will be here tomorrow. If not, I will save it. When it comes to work, that’s a tossup. I could continue where I am or start my own stuff.
Happiness.
Solidarity.
Independence.
Not having to rely on or trust anybody else for what I need or my happiness.
Mike describes himself as determined.
